Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest Pillar Point, California February 8, 2006

The sets became stronger and cleaner as the competition moved toward the final rounds. 
When the scores were tallied, Grant Baker of South Africa was declared the 2006 champion and winner of the $30,000 first prize. 
|
The 24 competitors were invited months in advance, mainly by contest director and Mavericks legend Jeff Clark. 
Surfers greeted fans and signed autographs as they exited the water.
