Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest Pillar Point, California February 8, 2006

The competition began at 8 a.m. 
Most chose the hilltop around the military base as a viewing point. 
The broadcast booth and hillside crowd covered the southern shore. NBC will broadcast the event nationally on May 13, 2006. |
With the usual 24 hours notice, conditions were deemed right for the 3rd annual Mavericks surf contest. 
As the word got out, the crowds began streaming in. 
Some opted for the giant-screen television that broadcast the event live from the parking area. 
Helicopter film crews recorded the event from the air.
