Eldorado National Forest, California

December 31, 2005

A drive through the Sierra Nevada in eastern California.

Along Highway 88 through the town of Jackson. This area was the birthplace of the California Gold Rush in 1849.

The rain turned into snow at the higher elevations.

My goal was Caples Lake beyond the Kirkwood Ski Resort for a hike and a few pictures.

The elevation changes from 1,000 feet in the foothills to more than 10,000 feet at the peak.

Tire chains were required past this point.

Mother nature had other ideas. The heavy snow forced a road closure.

I made it as far as Silver Lake before road officials closed the highway.
