Point Bonita Lighthouse

July 28, 2007

A hike through the Marin headlands of northern California.

The New Lighthouse
The new lighthouse was completed in 1877. The black lantern room and lens from the original tower were used.

The building is a one-story tower with three rooms. The central room was built with heavy walls to support the tower. The entire structure stands 33 feet high.

Marin Headlands
The Marin headlands begin just north of the Golden Gate Bridge but feel like they're a world apart from the bustling city of San Francisco.

Fort Cronkite
The headlands were a military base until the late 1960s. Designed to protect San Francisco Bay from invasion, yesterday's bunkers and underground concrete buildings serve today as ghostly reminders of the area's military past.
